Benefits of Studying Abroad

-
Does my student have to be from one of the CCSA member schools?Students from any accredited U.S. institution are welcome to participate in CCSA programs! This inclusive policy allows a diverse range of students to experience the benefits of studying abroad, regardless of their home institution. For students coming from non-member schools, CCSA has a streamlined process in place to ensure they can still benefit from our programs. These students will be registered for credit through CCSA's home institution, Western Kentucky University. This arrangement not only facilitates their participation in the program but also provides them with the opportunity to earn academic credit that can be transferred back to their home institution upon completion of the program. To ensure a smooth transfer process, students are encouraged to consult with their academic advisors before enrolling in a CCSA program. This will help them understand how the credits earned abroad can be applied to their degree requirements. CCSA is committed to supporting all students throughout their study abroad journey, providing the resources and guidance necessary for a successful and enriching experience.
-
When can my student study abroad?CCSA offers courses during both the winter and summer terms. Winter programs run for two weeks over the winter break, starting on December 26 and typically concluding on January 8 or 9. Summer courses vary in length, lasting either two or three weeks, depending on the specific program dates.
-
Can my student join a course without registering for credit? If your student is currently enrolled in a college or university, they are required to register for CCSA courses for academic credit. This allows them to not only enhance their learning experience but also to earn credits that contribute to their degree requirements. Participating for credit ensures that students can maximize their study abroad experience while staying on track academically. For participants aged 26 or older who are not currently enrolled in any higher education institution, CCSA offers the option to audit courses. Auditing allows these individuals to experience the program and participate in the enriching activities and discussions without the pressure of completing assignments or receiving grades. While auditing students are expected to fully engage in class activities, they are not obligated to submit coursework or assessments, providing a more relaxed and flexible learning environment. This option can be particularly appealing for lifelong learners or professionals looking to expand their knowledge and cultural awareness without the need for formal accreditation. For more detailed information on the auditing process, including any specific requirements or guidelines, please contact the CCSA Executive Director. They will be happy to assist you and provide any additional resources necessary to facilitate the auditing experience.
-
Can my student apply for more than one program at the same time?Participants are limited to enrolling in one course during the winter session. This approach allows students to fully immerse themselves in a single subject, ensuring a focused and intensive study abroad experience. In contrast, students interested in studying abroad during the summer can apply for multiple courses, provided they do not occur concurrently. This flexibility enables students to explore various subjects and broaden their academic experience, taking advantage of the diverse offerings available during the summer session. It’s important for students to review program schedules to avoid any conflicts, allowing them to tailor their study abroad journey to their interests and goals.
-
Does my student need a certain GPA to apply?CCSA adheres to the academic standards established by its member institutions to ensure a high-quality educational experience for all participants. This means that students wishing to join a CCSA program must be in "good academic and disciplinary standing" at their home institution. Being in good academic standing typically means that students are meeting their institution's GPA requirements and maintaining satisfactory progress toward their degree. Additionally, good disciplinary standing indicates that students have not been subject to serious disciplinary actions that could impact their eligibility to study abroad. This policy helps maintain a positive learning environment and ensures that participants are prepared for the challenges and responsibilities of studying in a foreign country. By upholding these standards, CCSA aims to foster a supportive and respectful community where students can thrive academically and culturally. Students should consult their academic advisors to confirm their eligibility and ensure they meet the necessary requirements for participation in the program.
-
Can my student use financial aid?Absolutely! CCSA programs are fully integrated into the regular course offerings of member institutions, enabling students to apply for any student loans or grants for which they are typically eligible. This integration makes it easier for students to finance their study abroad experience, as they can utilize existing financial aid resources without navigating a separate funding process. Campus representatives are available to assist students with financial aid information and provide guidance on how to apply for funding specific to study abroad. They can help clarify any questions about eligibility, documentation required, and the application process. In addition, the CCSA Central Office plays a vital role in keeping financial aid offices at member institutions informed about program costs, ensuring that they have the most up-to-date information to help students with their financial planning. It’s essential for students applying for financial aid to begin the process well in advance of application deadlines. Early planning is crucial to address any potential issues and to ensure that all necessary paperwork is submitted on time. This proactive approach helps facilitate a smooth financial aid process, allowing students to focus on preparing for their enriching study abroad experience.
-
Are there any scholarships available?Yes, CCSA offers a variety of scholarships that can be found on our website. These scholarships are designed to help students offset the costs of their study abroad experiences, making it more accessible for them to pursue their international educational goals. We encourage participants to explore the different options available, as each scholarship may have specific eligibility criteria and application requirements, allowing students to find opportunities that best suit their individual situations. In addition to CCSA scholarships, students should also reach out to their institution's study abroad office for information about other scholarship opportunities. Many colleges and universities offer financial aid specifically for study abroad programs, including departmental grants, merit-based scholarships, and need-based assistance. The study abroad office can provide valuable guidance on available funding options, application processes, and deadlines, helping students maximize their financial resources and make the most of their international experience. By actively seeking out these opportunities, students can significantly reduce the financial burden of studying abroad and focus on their academic and cultural growth.

Does my student need a visa? For most short-term study abroad programs, U.S. citizens typically do not need a visa. CCSA will inform all participants if any changes occur. However, a visa is required for entry into Australia. If your student is traveling to Australia as part of our group travel, CCSA will automatically arrange the necessary travel visa for U.S. citizens. If your student is not a U.S. citizen, they should immediately contact both their home-country embassy in the U.S. and the embassy or consulate of the destination country to determine the required entry documents. Additionally, they must contact U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services to confirm the necessary documents for re-entry into the U.S. and to ensure that traveling abroad will not negatively affect their U.S. residency status.
-
What does my student need to pack?Once your student has been accepted into the program, they will receive a comprehensive Participant Handbook that includes detailed packing guidelines tailored to the specific program. This handbook serves as a valuable resource, outlining not only what to bring but also providing tips on how to prepare for studying in a different country. In addition to the handbook, CCSA conducts program-specific orientations well in advance of departure. These orientations are designed to prepare students for their study abroad experience, covering packing recommendations, travel logistics, cultural expectations, and safety tips. During these sessions, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and clarify any uncertainties regarding their upcoming journey. By providing these resources, CCSA aims to ensure that students feel confident and well-prepared as they embark on their international adventure. The combination of the Participant Handbook and the orientation sessions helps students understand the essentials of packing and preparation, ultimately contributing to a smoother transition into their study abroad experience.

Are flights included in the base price? While only a select few programs require group travel, CCSA offers group flights as an option for all programs. This allows students to travel together, fostering a sense of community and support from the very beginning of their journey. We provide transparent information on flight costs, enabling students to assess whether the group travel option or independent travel is the best fit for their needs and preferences. Students who choose the group flight benefit from the convenience of coordinated travel arrangements, ensuring that they arrive at their destination together and can easily navigate any initial challenges as a group. Conversely, those considering the independent travel option will find the details and costs clearly outlined, helping them make an informed decision based on their personal travel style and itinerary. For specific information regarding flight options, costs, and related logistics, please refer to the individual course pages. Each course page provides comprehensive details, ensuring that students have all the information they need to choose the best travel option for their study abroad experience.
-
Can my student fly independently?Yes, for most programs, CCSA allows students the flexibility to travel independently. This option is ideal for those who wish to explore additional destinations or customize their travel plans before or after the official program dates. To ensure that independent travelers can seamlessly join the group, CCSA will provide clear directions, along with specific details regarding the date and time for them to meet the group at the destination. This arrangement allows students to enjoy the freedom of independent travel while still benefiting from the structure and support of the CCSA program. By offering this option, CCSA accommodates various travel preferences and encourages students to make the most of their international experience. Additionally, students will receive information on local transportation options, recommended arrival times, and any necessary logistical details, ensuring they can easily navigate their journey to join their peers. This balance of independence and support helps create a well-rounded and enriching study abroad experience.
-
Can my student stay longer in the destination country? For programs that allow for independent travel, participants have the option to explore destinations outside of the official program dates, whether that means arriving early or staying longer after the program concludes. This flexibility enables students to enrich their study abroad experience by immersing themselves in the local culture or visiting nearby attractions. If your student wishes to take advantage of this option, they must select "Independent Travel" on their CCSA application and arrange their own airfare. It’s important to note that CCSA is unable to modify group travel flights for those traveling independently. Students should ensure their travel plans align with the program schedule, as CCSA will provide detailed instructions on where and when to meet the group at the destination. This arrangement allows students to enjoy the freedom of independent travel while still benefiting from the program's structure and support

I’m concerned about my student studying abroad alone.CCSA programs are specifically designed with first-time study abroad students in mind, providing a welcoming and supportive environment as they embark on this exciting journey. We recognize that studying abroad can be both exhilarating and daunting, which is why we prioritize creating a nurturing atmosphere for all participants. To foster this supportive environment, we maintain a low student-to-faculty ratio, allowing for more personalized attention and engagement between faculty and students. This ensures that students can easily seek help, ask questions, and receive feedback, enhancing their overall learning experience. Additionally, on-site administrators are available 24/7 throughout the program to provide guidance and assistance as needed. Whether it's navigating a new city, addressing academic concerns, or managing any challenges that arise, our dedicated staff is always just a call or a short walk away. This round-the-clock support helps to alleviate any worries students may have, allowing them to focus on their studies and fully immerse themselves in the cultural experience. By ensuring that students are never without support, CCSA aims to create a memorable and enriching study abroad experience that builds confidence and independence.

Does the base price cover insurance?Yes, the base price includes basic international medical and evacuation insurance for all participants. This coverage is designed to provide essential protection in case of medical emergencies or the need for evacuation while abroad. Additionally, CCSA has established strong relationships with local clinics, pharmacies, and hospitals to ensure students receive quality care. These connections help facilitate prompt treatment and make navigating healthcare in a foreign country easier for students.
