Health & Safety While Abroad
Your well-being is our top priority!
While short-term study abroad programs are exciting and fast-paced, it's essential to stay mindful of your health and safety throughout your time away. By taking a few simple precautions, you’ll be better prepared to focus on what really matters: learning, connecting, and making the most of your experience.
Before You Go
-
Pack any medications you take regularly, along with copies of your prescriptions. Bring enough for your entire trip, in original packaging.
-
Download and print your CCSA health insurance card.
-
Share your travel plans with a trusted contact at home and keep digital and paper copies of important documents (passport, insurance card, prescriptions).
Staying Healthy
-
Stay hydrated and get plenty of rest, especially in the first few days while adjusting to your new environment.
-
Eat balanced meals and take care if trying new foods, especially if you have allergies or dietary restrictions.
-
Wash your hands often or carry hand sanitizer, especially after using public transport or before eating.
Personal Safety
-
Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded or unfamiliar areas.
-
Use reputable transportation options (public transit, registered taxis, or rideshare apps).
-
Avoid walking alone at night. Always go out in groups and stick to well-lit areas.
Emergencies & Communication
-
Save the provided emergency contacts in your phone: the local emergency number, your faculty's number, and that of the on-site CCSA staff person.
-
Know the location of the nearest clinic or hospital, and how to get there if needed.
-
Keep your phone charged and carry a portable charger - especially on excursion days.
Mental Well-Being
-
It’s normal to feel overwhelmed or homesick. Talk to your faculty leader or program staff if you’re struggling. They are there to support you!
-
Stay connected to friends and family, but also take time to unplug and enjoy your surroundings.
